Facebook Hired PR Firm to Run Smear Campaign Against Google
The battle between Facebook and Google intensified this week when The Daily Beast and USA Today revealed that Facebook hired a PR firm to go after the search giant.Last Friday, USA Today reported that PR firm Burson-Marsteller had contacted a variety of news outlets pushing a story about how Google's "Social Circle" Gmail feature violates users' privacy. The pitch was made on behalf of an unnamed client that The Daily Beast later confirmed was Facebook.
When pressed, Facebook confirmed the hire to the Daily Beast, citing concerns it had with the way Google was using its data. It was also reportedly annoyed that Google was boosting its own social-networking services with information from Facebook.
"In other words, just as Google built Google News by taking content created by hundreds of newspapers and repackaging it, so now Google aims to build a social-networking business by using that rich user data that Facebook has gathered," Dan Lyons wrote for The Daily Beast.
Facebook Red-Faced as Clumsy Google Smear Campaign Is Discovered
The world's largest internet site is rocked by scandal

With over 600 million active users, Facebook is an industry juggernaut. It recently snatched the title of most-used website from veteran search giant Google Inc. (GOOG), who is faced with antitrust and privacy accusations.
Not surprisingly, Google and Facebook have been increasingly butting heads as both companies try to encroach on each other's online territories. But even amid that backdrop, Facebook's latest move may seem particularly shocking and audacious to some -- it secretly hired a public relations firm to trash Google, spreading questionable attack stories about its rival.

Are Facebook Apps 'Leaking' User Information?
A Tuesday report from Symantec said that, until recently, Facebook apps have inadvertently been leaking user data to third-party developers. In response, Facebook said the problem has been fixed and that no unauthorized Facebook data was shared with third parties. In a blog post, Symantec's Nishant Doshi said that third-parties, mostly advertisers, have "accidentally" had access to Facebook user information like profiles, photographs, and chat.
"Fortunately, these third-parties may not have realized their ability to access this information," Doshi wrote. "[But] we estimate that as of April 2011, close to 100,000 applications were enabling this leakage. We estimate that over the years, hundreds of thousands of applications may have inadvertently leaked millions of access tokens to third parties."
Retail Sales in U.S. Rise on in Fuel, Food Spending
Sales at U.S. retailers rose in April, reflecting gains at service stations and grocery stores as fuel and food prices climbed.
The 0.5 percent increase was the smallest since July and followed a 0.9 percent March gain that was more than double the previous estimate, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for a 0.6 percent rise. Sales excluding automobiles and gasoline increased 0.2 percent.
Mounting bills for gasoline and groceries are leaving Americans with less money for other purchases. At the same time, chains like Limited Brands Inc. and Macy’s Inc. (M) topped analysts’ sales estimates last month, a sign the improving job market will prevent consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the economy, from faltering.

Death of reggae singer ignites protest
Smiley Culture, reggae artist, father, uncle, friend, brother and inspiration to many Black Britons, allegedly stabbed himself through the heart while making tea at his home if police are to be believed. The death of the star whose 1980s hits “Police Officer” and “Cockney Translation” endeared him to adults and youth alike, and a man considered one of the “pioneers of British rap” born
Police raided Mr. Emmanuel's Warlingham, Surrey home March 15 to serve an arrest warrant reported the BBC. Reports say he was scheduled to face trial the upcoming week and was accused of conspiracy to supply cocaine. Police allege Mr. Emmanuel stabbed himself. Others question this story and say the culture of police brutality and racism is still alive and well in the UK. “However Smiley died, he didn't die the way the official story tells it. I owe him a lot – he was a symbol of what it might be to belong here,” author Paul Gilroy told Socialist Worker at the protest.
Former gang members: A life sentence of joblessness
It's everyone's business to give former gang members a chance to prove themselves through work.
Lorenzo had a hard time concealing his nervousness. Standing in front of a large room packed with Boeing employees in late March, the tall, lanky African American gang member described the arc of his life. At 22, he had spent nearly a third of his life incarcerated.

Peering out of his round, black-rimmed glasses, he talked about his seven months at Homeboy Industries (the largest gang reentry program in the country), and about how he had moved quickly from the janitorial team to become an assistant in the accounting department. "I used to steal money," he said. "Now I'm counting it."
Delaware: Medical Marijuana Nears Legalization
All that is left to make medical marijuana legal in Delaware is the signature of the governor, who has said he will make it law. The bill would allow people 18 and older with certain serious or debilitating conditions that could be alleviated by marijuana to possess up to six ounces of the drug. On Wednesday by a 17-4 vote the State Senate gave its approval to the bill that cleared the House last week. It heads to the desk of Gov. Jack Markell. Under the bill, qualifying patients would be referred to state-licensed and regulated “compassion centers,” which would be responsible for growing, cultivating and dispensing the marijuana. Delaware would join 15 other states and the District of Columbia in legalizing medical marijuana.
For Many Entrepreneurs, Life Begins at 50
There’s a lot of chatter these days about how eagerly Gen Y is embracing entrepreneurship. But you don’t hear nearly as much about the other demographic that’s also pursuing business ownership, driven more by purpose than passion.
There’s been a surge of people aged 50-plus starting businesses, and it’s happening for a number of reasons. But today’s driving factor, according to the Staying Ahead of the Curve 2007 survey from AARP, appears to be “financial need.”
Americans over 55 were particularly hard hit by this past recession. Not only did their jobless rate hit record levels, but their average length of joblessness, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, was over 35 weeks, compared to 30 weeks for workers ages 25 to 34. (These stats, provided earlier this year, were the latest supplied by the bureau.)
According to a report titled “What’s the Matter With the U.S. Job Market?” — part of the UCLA Anderson Forecast, an economic outlook released last December — about 5.5 million lost jobs are not coming back. So instead of seeking jobs that don’t exist, older Americans are starting businesses. In fact, the Kauffman Foundation reports there’s an entrepreneurial boom among 55- to 64-year-olds, who are now nearly twice as likely to start successful businesses as 20- to 34-year-olds.
Food God Suggests
What food does Allah (God) suggest? He suggests the food that is good for us and does not make us ill. Food that is for human consumption and not for animals.
Never before have we gone so far astray. The European
White race, blessed with the privilege of eating the best food the earth provides, has taught us to eat the worst (divinely prohibited) food. We eat all the time, three and four times a day. This is enough to wear out the intestines of a brass monkey.
Eat a single meal a day, no matter what anyone says. If your doctor says that you should eat more than one meal a day, ignore him with a smile , and eat only once a day. If he tells you he eats three meals a day, tell him that his length of life is about the same as his patients. Then, tell the doctor to try eating one meal a day.
The more idle our stomachs are, the longer they will last. The more we tax our stomach, the sooner it wears out. We all try to live as long as we can because nature never teaches us that we should not try to live. We do not have a nature that teaches us to die, or teaches of life somewhere else.
