HUD report: Low income renters suffering

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently released its bi-annual report to Congress on the housing needs of low income Americans.

It shows an increased number of very low income households have severe housing difficulties, particularly housing costs that far exceed what they can afford.

By race, Hispanic very low-income renters had the highest incidence of worst case needs in 2009, with 45.3 percent. White renters had the next highest incidence, with 42.7 percent, followed by Black renters, with 36.5 percent, according to the report.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Killed April 4, 1968

Haunting speculations still arise today in the 21st Century as to who was really behind Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s murder on April 4, 1968.  Do any of us really care?

What kind of world do we live in that allows great men and women, who fight unbalance injustices, to become victims of plotted intentional violence?

Undoubtedly, many of us are aware of Dr. King's famous speech "I Have A Dream," but most folks do not get to listen to his speech regarding the VietNam war, which is one of the few reasons many people believe, and  hold deep within themselves as to why he was murdered.

Another belief many people cite in unison regarding Dr. King's death is the notion that there was a 'stool pidgeon,' or a 'snitch' lurking within Dr. King's inner camp circle of [so-called] friends, whereas King learned about his identity, and was swiftly snuffed out because of it.


And of course, let us not forget about Dr. King's visit with both the late Malcolm X, and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, whom many believed (and had knowledge of) Dr. King's intentions in becoming a part of the Nation of Islam.  Thus, giving an additional reason to believe that is why his death had to be fulfilled.


Much like the death of former President John F. Kennedy, whose demise ended with murder, a myriad of credible conspiratorial theories relating as to why he, too, was snuffed out, continues to spell-bound millions of people.

In remembrance of Dr. King's death on this day in April 1968, I've posted some videos relating to some of the reasons millions of people believe why his death was indeed plotted to keep him silent, forever.

We’re all focused right now on Libya and budget battles at home, but this story from Bangladesh just broke my heart and outraged me — and offers a reminder of the daily human rights struggles of so many women and girls in villages around the world. A 14-year-old Bangladeshi girl, Hena, allegedly was ambushed when she went to an outdoor toilet, gagged, beaten and raped by an older man in her village (who was actually her cousin). They were caught by wife of the alleged rapist, and the wife then beat Hena up. An imam at a local mosque issued a fatwa saying that Hena was guilty of adultery and must be punished, and a village makeshift court sentenced Hena to 100 lashes in a public whipping.

The Minister called the news conference to address U.S. policy in the Middle East and military attacks on Libya. He again condemned U.S. military action against Libya and warned the president about tricks that could lead to his disgrace and ruin. The bombing of Libya has ended hope in Africa and in the Middle East that President Obama would usher in a different type of U.S. policy and hurt the president's popularity, he said.

A diverse crowd of hundreds convened outside city hall to express their displeasure with budget cuts proposed by Governor Rick Perry and the Texas GOP Legislature.

The “Texans Day of Outrage” rally was held on March 15.

Despite having an estimated $9.4 billion in its Economic Stabilization Fund, also known as the Rainy Day Fund, the state of Texas is facing a $27 billion budget crisis. Gov. Perry is on the verge of cutting $10 billion in funding for schools and possibly laying off 100,000 school employees over the next several years. Gov. Perry has also come under scrutiny for refusing to accept $830 million from the federal Education Jobs fund that could be used for teacher assistance.





Angry workers march, fight back as wages fall, rights threatened

William Peterson, 46, the son of a Hartsville, South Carolina, brick mason, has worked at the Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx for the past four years.

Now he is in a fight to keep his $24.50 an hour union job. Management wants to lay him and 23 other workers off, saying it is cheaper to outsource their work to a private contractor.

The question about the "rightness" of vigilante revenge definitely comes up after a father, an ex-South Africa rugby star, went on what looks to be a revenge killing spree, using an axe to murder three men he believes gang raped his daughter and gave her HIV. One of the victims' heads was found a mile away from his body. One of the two other men, also killed by axe, was nearly decapitated as well.

For anyone who has a daughter or a child, it seems a rightly served form of justice on men who would commit a heinous and violent crime against a young girl, especially leaving her to fight a deadly virus for life; however, this string of violence at the hands of a rage-filled father also reminds us to consider that taking the law into our own hands might not always work out how it should.

New York (CNN) -- Dr Manning Marable, director of Columbia University's Center for Contemporary Black History has died, according to a statement from the NAACP. He was 61.
The statement did not give a cause of the Friday death.
"Dr. Marable's contributions to the struggle for freedom of African Americans will never be forgotten," stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.
"Dr. Marable brought one of the keenest intellects of our age to the contemporary conversation on race in America," Jealous said.

Libyan rebels struggle to explain rift

BENGHAZI, Libya — Libya’s rebel military struggled Saturday to explain an apparent rift within its highest ranks while acknowledging its soldiers’ role in a mistaken NATO bombing of rebel columns the night before.

The strike, which killed 13 rebels and injured seven, illustrated the hazards of conducting an aerial bombing campaign against a fluid and fast moving front line. Several cars and an ambulance were also incinerated, and opposition leaders said rebels may have been responsible for the bombing because they had fired their guns into the air in celebration.

 “It was a terrible mistake, and we apologize, and we will not let it happen again,” said Abdul Hafidh Ghoga, vice president and spokesman of the opposition’s Transitional National Council.

U.S. officials, opposition warn Libya could get bloodier

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- From the halls of Congress to the shell-pocked streets of Libyan cities, intertwined themes rang clear Thursday: Leader Moammar Gadhafi is determined to prevail, and the opposition needs more training and allied air strikes to have a chance.

Gates reiterated the Obama administration's promise that no U.S. ground forces will be used in Libya, telling committee members that the rebels had indicated they didn't want such an intervention.
But the United States does have CIA personnel on the ground.
A U.S. intelligence source said the CIA is operating in the country to help increase U.S. "military and political understanding" of the situation.
A former counterterrorism official with knowledge of U.S. Libya policy said there is a presidential finding authorizing the CIA to conduct operations in support of U.S. policy in Libya, including assessing the opposition and determining their needs.
Specific activities by CIA officers will be determined by conditions on the ground and would need further approval from the White House, the source said.

Strike Hits Gaddafi Compound in Tripoli - Africa - AlJazeera English


A three-story building in a military command centre used by Muammar Gaddafi has been destroyed in an air strike by coalition forces.

The Sunday-night strike was the first reported attack on the Bab al-Azizia, a sprawling compound in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, that Gaddafi has used several times as a setting for televised addresses, and which was bombed by the United States in 1986.

Arab League Condemns Broad Bombing Campaign in Libya

The Arab League secretary general, Amr Moussa, deplored the broad scope of the U.S.-European bombing campaign in Libya and said Sunday that he would call a league meeting to reconsider Arab approval of the Western military intervention.

Moussa said the Arab League’s approval of a no-fly zone on March 12 was based on a desire to prevent Moammar Gaddafi’s air force from attacking civilians and was not designed to endorse the intense bombing and missile attacks — including on Tripoli, the capital, and on Libyan ground forces — whose images have filled Arab television screens for two days.

Sometimes You Need A Little Humor To Brighten Your Day!

The Lone Ranger and Tonto turn in for the evening out on the plains.
After a few hours, Tonto suddenly nudges the Lone Ranger until he awakens. Tonto says, with alarm in his voice "Look up! What do you see?"
The Lone Ranger looks up and says "I see the nighttime sky."
Tonto nods and says "So what does that tell you?"
The Lone Ranger thinks about it for a moment, then says "Well, astronomically, it tells me there are millions or even billions of stars and planetary systems in our galaxy.
Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is currently in Leo.
Theologically, I feel the sky suggests that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant.
Time-wise, from the position of the moon, I'd say it's about 11:45pm.
And meteor-logically, from the clarity of the sky, I'd say we're in for a great day of weather tomorrow.
Why, Tonto? What does the nighttime sky tell you?"
Tonto replies "It tells me somebody stole our damn tent, you jackass!"
